Abstract This article explores the various types of responses of Taiwanese women who have been battered over an extended period of time and analyzes how the personal resources and social bonds possessed by the abused women influenced their reactions to marital abuse. In accordance with Resource Theory, Social Control Theory, and the family values of traditional Chinese society, this study categorizes the women who have experienced marital violence into four types by the characteristics of the collected data: paternalists, ritualists, equalitarians, and idealists. The researchers suggest that a theoretical framework of spousal abuse based on macro socio-cultural analyses would help understand how abused women seek support and leave the trauma behind after perceiving worsening conditions and enhancing their own abilities.
