What effects have China’s “Open Door and Reform Policy” and the liberalization of Taiwanese indirect trade and investment in Mainland China had on the cross-strait division of labor and economic competition? This article analyzes the characteristics of China’s economic development model, how these characteristics have attracted Taiwanese investment, and how this investment has led to the eventual change in the structure of Taiwan’s trade and production.
This research has found that over time, Taiwanese industry has become the upstream supplier for the Taiwan business community in China, but that along with this change has been the rising trend of Chinese firms being able to slowly replace Taiwanese products with their own on the American export market. In order to galvanize its industry and put itself in a more advantageous position to compete in the global marketplace and in cross-strait economic affairs, it is imperative that Taiwan strengthens its research and development programs.
