About low temperature physics lab

The laboratory was set up at A.D. 1988. Under the leadership of Professor Hung-Duen Yang, for fifteen years, our lab has become one of the best labs in the Department of Physics in National Sun Yat-sen University. The lab is famous for the research areas of low temperature physics and is of internationaly recognized in low temperature specific heat. Our facilities are complete and of the best quality in our major research areas.

To date, twenty two students have completed their graduate degrees and eighteen with master degrees. All students published one or more papers in international journals and presented their works at different physics conferences. So far, the staffs of the low temperature laboratory have published about 120 papers in international peer-reviewed journals. Now we are willing to welcome the joining of students who want to accept a challenge.

Research fields

Currently, the main focus of our research is the characterization of novel superconducting, magnetic materials and nano-materials, such as the crystal structure, electronic transition, magnetoresistance, magnetism, specific heat, and high pressure effect of materials.

The subjects recently are the fundamental studies in occurrence of high temperature superconductors and couplings of magnetic with electric effect of giant magnetoresistance, especially the measuring of resistance, specific heat, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity and high pressure effect under low temperature and high magnetic field. Furthermore, x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) in National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, neutron scattering collaborated with other groups were usually done for complementary studies on novel superconducting and magnetic materials. Besides, recently we start to collaborate with the chemists to study the physical character of self-assembly materials with nanostructure. A special interest is the quantum effects about electronic, magnetic and thermodynamics of liquids and solids in bounded space (nano-scale holes).
