Program overview

This program is committed to the development of our department into one of the top research centers in Asia on the subjects of equilibrium theory in optimization, variational inequalities and fixed point theory. Our research group consists of some of the top scholars in these areas, including the recently joining member, Dr. Xu, who is well-known for his contribution in fixed point theory, among others, and is a member of Academy of Science of South Africa. Their research has already made, and is continuously making impact in nonlinear analysis, including some over 250 frequently cited articles in many influential journals all over the world. In view of some of the recent investments of considerable resources into many currently active areas in mathematical research by major research institutes such as National Taiwan and National Tsing-Hwa universities, it is perhaps in our best interest to concentrate our comparatively limited resources into the areas on which we are already having advantages, such as nonlinear analysis and optimization theory, so that we can work with other major mathematical research centers in Taiwan in a cooperative (not competitive) way. We hope that one day, in the near future, a complete and efficient research network in mathematics can be established here in order to improve our overall researching capabilities to help Taiwan become one of the leading research center in the mainstream areas in mathematics in Asia and in the world.
