National
Sun Yat-sen University is the hinge of a Local
Area Network (LAN) in the Kaohsiung and Pingtong area. Therefore, the effective
transmission speed is among the best in the whole country. Moreover, Campus
Dormitory Net Promotion Association (CDPA) replaced all the old 10MB
transmission lines (TL) with 100MB ones. That is why the Internet transmission
speed is even better than before.
To
serve freshmen, CDPA edited this Dormitory-net booklet, making sure that all of
you will know how to operation related equipment as soon as possible. Things
like this will never have to happen again: you spent lot of money on computer
equipment but don’t know how to get on the Internet in the dormitory area.
We use simple words with pictures to introduce every Internet service step by step, from the basic network settings to advanced software installment, including dormitory-net standard and some other important items. We hope that all of you will understand the dormitory-net better after taking a look at this booklet and enjoy the convenience of campus dormitory-net.

1: Introduction to Campus Dormitory-net Promotion Association (CDPA)
Campus Dormitory-net Promotion Association (CDPA), a student association, is founded by enthusiastic students who care about dormitory-net. The initial purpose of CDPA was to provide students with better dormitory-net quality and take the responsibility of dormitory-net service, making the transmission speed smooth and reduce the difficulty of the computer center’s actual management. CDPA has been trying to focus on students’ interests of network usage, including existing free webpage space, E-mail account, Web Mail, and the Zhong Shan Network Community, to make sure that dormitory-net will be one of the NSYSU students’ favorite things.
* How to join CDPA? What are your rights and obligations after joining CDPA?
Members of CDPA will be divided into ?????. Students intending to join in CDPA membership ?????. Any member who intends to serve and learn how to manage dormitory-net will take part in a training course set up by dormitory-net management. After passing the test, you will help in managing dormitory-net. Sorry: the dormitory-net keepers will receive no pay.
* Activities of CDPA
CDPA will hold an activity in the CDPA office (1F, the library) at the beginning of every semester. The activity introduces you to the NSYSU dormitory-net architecture and to what other activities CDPA plans to hold in the semester. Interested students are welcome to join in these activities. Also, CDPA will hold courses all through the semester, teaching in details from basic dormitory setting to setting up your personal server. Feel free to participate in the courses! There are computers books in the CDPA office and students are welcome to read them there. CDPA provides computers so that students can set up their own workstations. So there is no problem if you don’t have a computer to set up your server.
* Location of CDPA
B1, the library and information building.
* Communicate with CDPA
Please leave a post on the board “NSYSU-CDPA” on Shi-Wan BBS if you have any question. Besides that, you can also post your questions on CDPA BBS (telnet://bbs.cdpa.nsysu.edu.tw)

2: National Sun Yat-sen Dormitory-net Management Measures
1. Any person who resides in the campus dormitory is certainly qualified to use the dormitory-net. Students using the dormitory-net have to have a personal computer (PC), a Network Interface Card (NIC) (RJ-45 interface), and one unshielded twisted pair (UTP).[1].
2. The NIC and network line installed by students themselves must match the standard so as to reduce the breakdown rate and improve the network efficiency. If the quality of dormitory-net is affected due to students’ NIC and network line, students need to replace them with proper ones to make sure the quality will not be affected again.
3. In the beginning of every academic year or after changing rooms, students must change their original IP address[2] to the re-assigned one.
4. Please refer to the following chapter for the setting-up of dormitory-net and IP Address, dealing with break-downs, and assignment of IP Address.
5. Users of dormitory-net must comply with the network Usage Regulations and other related regulations passed by NSYSU and Taiwan Area Network (TANet).
6. Announcement:
6.1 Every individual will be assigned one IP Address. The assigned IP Address will be restricted for only one computer. Please do not do repetitive addressing, or you may not be able to get on-line.
6.2 The IP Address has something to do with the smoothness of transmission speed, so it is absolutely prohibited to use others’ IP Address to get on-line. Please do not set it without authorization, or you may bother yourself or other people. The individual who sets an IP Address without authorization or uses an unauthorized IP Address will be deprived of the right to access to the Internet.
6.3 Any individual user who uploads more than 15G, thus over-consuming bandwidth, will be blocked from access to the Internet automatically by program. However, uploading and downloading internally network is not limited to that 15G maximum.
6.4 It is absolutely prohibited to maintain the public dormitory-net equipment without authorization or damage network equipment. Any one who, on purpose, damages the line, materials, or any other network equipment or hinders the regular transmission of the Internet signal will be deprived of access to the Internet.
6.5 All the network lines must be UTP. To efficiently improve the transmission rate and ensure Internet connection quality, it is not allowed to use flat telephone line.
6.6 Be cautious while shopping for a Network Interface Card. Do not use a Network Interface Card of uncertain quality, or it may affect the transmission rate of the whole network.
6.7 To avoid electricity leakage disabling the whole network, please ground your computer.
6.8 Please make sure that you follow the regulations and netiquettes while getting on the campus network.
6.9 To avoid any problem, please comply with the machine denomination regulations and IP Address regulations while using network resources.
6.10 To avoid a too-heavy network load severely influencing the network quality, please do not overuse the network share or play on-line game too much.
6.11 It is absolutely prohibited to segment subnet or set up a Router.[3]
6.12 Process of reporting a breakdown and requesting repair: (CDPA maintains the network only, not your computer.)
a. Does the machine itself malfunction? Did you execute software improperly?
b. Are any of the connectors in your room unplugged? Is there any electricity leakage from your personal computer?
c. You can report problems and ask for repair on the Board dorm-net-119, Shi Wan BBS.
d. The job of CDPA is to manage the network usage and to deal with some simple breakdowns. Any breakdown of hardware will be maintained by the Computer Center or manufacturers.

The function of proxy is to avoid wasting time while fetching the web pages. Proxy is like a big hard disk which saves information from existing web pages. If there is something saved in proxy that you want, you do not have to be on-line but the proxy will transfer the specific webpage to you directly. If it does not, proxy will ask the host for information according to the address. Besides transferring the information to you, proxy will also save it for backup. Next time when someone else calls up the same information, proxy will not waste too much time searching for it. Through its inner setting, proxy will automatically update the webpage contents which it has browsed, so you do not have to worry that the webpage you are browsing is out of date. Setting proxy can avoid wasting time and bandwidth while fetching web pages. How does this work? Imagine the bandwidth as a highway and the website as your destination. If there are ten people getting on the Internet at the same time, it is like ten people driving on the highway toward the same destination. It would be easy to get traffic jams within the limited lanes (limited bandwidth). Proxy is like a bus, getting ten people to their destination in one go. With fewer cars, traffic will be easier and smoother. That is why it is better to set proxy.
Step 1: Double-click on the Internet Explore icon on desktop. Click on the Tools tab → Internet Options.
Step 2: The dialogue box of Internet Options will show up. Click on the Connection tab → Click on the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings tab.

1. Q:What is dormitory-net?
A: There is a campus network in every national university. Campus network is a LAN, connecting every department, college, and administrative office, enabling every computer in campus to connect to the network and to use the many resources on TANet.
Dormitory-net is an extension of the campus network. Every single computer in the dormitory is able to connect to the network and fetch anything its user wants on the Internet. Domestically speaking, National Chaio Tung University (NCTU) was the first school extending the campus network into the dormitory area. The measure made the rate network use higher among students in NCT, influencing directly the spread of network use and the convenience of getting information while learning. Therefore, the other national universities also set up dormitory-net one after one. Whther a university id equipped with dormitory-net or not is now a critical reason for students considering which school or graduate school to go to. In the near future, it is believed that dormitory-net will be a very important part of every school’s teaching facilities.
2. Regulations of dormitory-net traffic management.
2.1 Q: What is the traffic management about?
A: There is no limit on the traffic and transmission speed internally. However, there is a limit on the traffic and transmission externally:
Calculating from August third, 2006
Individual user who uploads more than 15G, thus over-consuming bandwidth, will automatically, by program, be denied access to the Internet.
Website below is Top100 of spreading out of dormitory-net:
Thhp://top100.cdpa.nsysu.edu.tw
Any student who uploads more than 15G will be denied access for three days. Any one who changes his/her IP Address or attempts to circumvent the limit will be denied access to Internet for a month. Please contact us on Board dorm-net-119 if you have any question.
2.2 Q: Why do we need Dormitory-net management?
A: Jamming of the external network has already interfered with the teaching and research purposes of the network. To comply with the resolution by the TANet Management Committee of the Ministry of Education against using up too much bandwidth, CDPA referred to the Dormitory-net management of National Central University (NCU), NCTU, and National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), and made a resolution on December first, 1999 about the dormitory-net management in NSYSU. After being endorsed by director of the Computer Center and the director of the Internet Office, Dormitory-net management came into effect on December sixth, 1999.
2.3 Q: Will the management bother me?
A: Never. If you have any requests, just apply to Computer Center.
3. Q: I share the same IP Address with other people. What should I do?
A: Restart your computer. See if there is message like this:
The system has detected a conflict for IP Address 140.117.xx.xx.with the system having hardware address xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx.
The interface has been disabled.
Or some numbers and alphabets show up like this: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx. It means you have the same IP Address as other people. Solution: Record this message and post it on the Board dorm-net-119 of Shi Wan BBS. CDPA will solve it as soon as possible.
4. Q: While surfing on the Internet, what should I do if the network gets jammed suddenly?
A: Restart you computer.
Please refer to FAQ question 3: I have the same IP Address with other people. What can I do?
If there is no message like this, it is impossible that you have the same IP Address as other people. Please follow the steps below:
4.1 Ask any other student who is using dormitory-net
Possibility one: No one can get on the Internet → dormitory-net has broken down probably → Post the problem on the Board dorm-net-119 of Shi Wan BBS. CDPA will deal with it.
Possibility two: You are the only one who cannot get on the Internet. If it is not because of your computer, please follow step 2.
4.2 Plug in another network jack than the one you have been using.
If you can get on the Internet now, this means your own network jack is broken. CDPA will deal with this problem. Please post it on the Board dorm-net-119 of Shi Wan BBS.
If you cannot get on the Internet, then get another network line and plug in again. If you can get on the Internet now, it means you have to get a new network line. If you still cannot get on the Internet, the problem lies in your computer. Please deal with it yourself.
5. Q: What is ping?
A: Packet Internet Groper.
It is a tool used to detect if the remote
host still exists. With Internet Control
Message Protocol (ICMP), it keeps sending Echo Request Messages to the
remote host waiting to be detected, and determines if the network condition is good, and if it is possible
to connect to remote host.
While executing the ping program, your host will send out a request named ICMP to the assigned remote host. The remote host will respond if it is able to get the request. Therefore, it is a easy way to see if the local host is able to connect to the remote host.
6. Q:What is DNS?
A: In short, it executes address resolution. In the original TCP-IP protocol, your will set the address with a number like 140.121.135.37. However, numbers are difficult to memorize, so the domain name will be memorized.
If you go on the telnet with domain name, such as bbs.ee.ntou.edu.tw,, DNS will execute address resolution to display your numerical IP Address.
In connection with this one should know:
1. If you go on the Internet with numerical IP Address, the transmission speed will be more rapid than with a domain name because the DNS does not have to execute address resolution.
If the typed domain name is not set up inside the domain name server list, it is still necessary go on the Internet with numerical IP Address.
[1] Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) is a cylinder line, not a flat line like telephone line or a coaxial cable line like a TV antenna.
[2] IP Address: the protocol while digital signals circulating on the Internet. IP Address is for every unique Internet site. Because Internet is a global network, any IP Address in the world is also unique.
[3] Router: Router is a kind of equipment connecting two networks. For instance, when a local area network (LAN) wants to connect with the Internet (or other wide area network, WAN) with a dedicated line, it is necessary to use a router as the bridge of LAN and WAN (the Internet here). With Routers, your can decide which path the data packet will travel to. The process of choosing paths is called route or routing.
